Background and Arrest

Heuermann, who lived with his wife and two children, was arrested on July 13, 2023, outside his Manhattan office. He was initially charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello, whose remains were found in burlap sacks along Gilgo Beach in 2010. In January 2024, he was additionally charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Subsequent investigations led to charges for the murders of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. Most recently, on December 17, 2024, Heuermann was charged with the murder of Valerie Mack, bringing the total number of charges to seven.

Evidence and Investigation

Prosecutors have presented a range of evidence linking Heuermann to the crimes:

  • DNA Evidence: Hairs found on several victims' remains were matched to Heuermann's family members. For instance, hair found with Valerie Mack's remains was found to be a likely match with the genetic profile of Heuermann’s daughter.

  • Planning Documents: Investigators discovered detailed planning documents at Heuermann's residence, outlining "dump sites" and preparations for the murders, including notes such as "remove head and hands."

  • Violent Pornography: A significant collection of violent, bondage, and torture pornography was found on Heuermann's electronic devices, with content dating back to at least 1994. Some images depicted mutilation and tying up women with ropes, consistent with injuries inflicted on the victims.

  • Media Clippings: Heuermann reportedly monitored investigations into the murders by collecting news articles about the cases. A search of his home uncovered various publications detailing bodies found along Ocean Parkway, indicating his prolonged interest in the case.

Current Status

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently incarcerated at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in Suffolk County, awaiting trial. He is being held without bail and is kept separate from the general population for his safety. Investigations are ongoing to determine if Heuermann is connected to additional unsolved murders.
